The Salt Lake City Police Department’s K9 Unit is under attack from anti-police District Attorney Sim Gill. Worse, they are being left out in the cold by their police chief and their mayor. The entire unit has been put on admin leave. Sim Gill is criminally screening another 18 apprehensions from over multiple years. This is an outstanding, award-winning K-9 team, and every one of those previous apprehensions was already ruled within department policy. One officer is already facing up to 15 years in prison - for a K9 apprehension that SLCPD previously ruled was within their policy and legal constraints.

Sim Gill won’t stop until he has successfully convicted a cop, as he has failed three times since 2014 alone. In the past, every time Sim Gill maliciously and politically charged an officer, the Utah FOP has been there to defeat him. Unfortunately, only one of the SLCPD K9 officers is a member of the FOP and is therefore covered by the FOP legal plan. Without going into too much detail, the rest of the unit has been handed to the political wolves.

We cannot stand idly by and watch veteran officers be sacrificed for politics. The Utah FOP is stepping in to help them all. After the DA is finished with SLCPD, he has set his sights on all K-9 units in the Salt Lake Valley. In a recent meeting, Sim told the valley chiefs and Sheriff that he was coming for their K9 programs and demanded all apprehensions in the past 4 years.

SLCPD is Sim Gill’s first target, but it won’t be his last. Because the rest of the unit cannot be covered by the FOP legal plan, we need to raise funds to fund the fight to save K9 programs in the Salt Lake Valley.
